Cortes Bank

Ventura Anticline

By Matt Belmont

Cortes Banks is an underwater mountain which is about 100 miles west of Sand Diego. It rests on the continental shelf not lying totally on one plate. Perhaps at one time this underwater mountain could have been an island, but since the last ice age it has remained underwater, putting it in the undersea category of earth science. Its unusual replacement makes it a wonderful place for people to explore. It offers a wide variety of ocean life in their natural habitat. However this area is not for everyone, it can be quite hazardous at times when waves up to and over 70 feet can break due to its shallow water. Some of these waves' force can be felt at depths of 100 feet. Being in the open ocean, Cortes Banks is known for its underwater beauty and deep blue water. As you can see Cortes Banks is an unusual and magnificent feature which the earth has formed since its creation. The most recent action caught at Cortes Banks was from a group of professional surfers in the past year. Since then Cortes Banks has been noted as an outstanding diving area and incredible big wave surfing spot.
