Tambora, Indonesia

1815

By Mike Donahue

My volcano is located in Tambora, Indonesia.
It's found on the Sanggar peninsula of Sunilawa Island.
The volcano lies 300 kilometers behind the Sunda Trench, but the subduction zone
in that area has a shallow dip and is less than 200 kilometers deep beneath Tambora.
It would come under volcano in the earth science aspect.

In 1815 in Tamobra, Indonesia there was a large volcanic eruption.
Sounds from the eruption were heard up to 1,400 kilometers away. A still larger
eruption occurred on 10-11 April, ejecting about 50 cubic kilometers of magma. An
estimated 92,000 people died from this eruption. This volcano is a large strato-volcano.

This eruption caused the "Year Without a Summer."
Tambora's volcanic cloud lowered global temperatures by as much as 3 degrees.
In parts of Europe and North America, 1816 was known as the "Year Without Summer."
This eruption was the most powerful recorded in history.
