IRC (international relay chat) A Guide in FAQ style! 1. What is IRC? It's a lot of chat rooms very similar to aol's chat rooms. 2. Why bother with another chat room? I found IRC looking for MP3 sound files. Aol rooms did not have oldies, the downloads were not reliable, they were too slow, you couldn't get into the rooms because they were overcrowded, and you could only download one song at a time! 3. How do i get there? Someone once said, "You stupid guys! Wakeup and get MIRC." Just one of those dumb chat room remarks? Well, I kept those letters in my head and found this great article which will introduce you to the world of IRC. (Can't find it now, but here's another!) Download for the MIRC software you'll need. 4. Where do I go? The list of channels is not complete. Here are some of the MP3 rooms I've found. [Oldies, in order of attendance numbers] #wav'n_to_the_oldies2 / #wav'n_thru_the_decades / #musicland / #musicwavs / #wav'n_to_the_oldies [Country] #countrymp3 [more current music] #mp3central / #mp3_addicts Let me know if you find others? What I'd really like are Disney songs and songs from musicals! And who out there has Glenn Yarborough and the Limelighters? (You youngsters might have heard him sing a song about JRR Tolkiens hobbits!) 5. These songs are scrolling thru the room window! How do I grab one? In most rooms all you have to do is type !sendername filename.mp3 and usually you'll get a message window and you click "accept." To stop the scrolling you need to move the up-arrow or vertical bar to the song you want so you can type in the letters. Be careful with hyphens vs underlines! Don't worry about upper/lower case. 6. What is Wavget? It's really the way to "get" the songs. Here's your second download site! A friendly "op" (operator) just sent me a copy (should be free). If not free at that site let me know. Even if you don't download from that site, bookmark it because it has a lot of information on all the controls and options for wavget. Get a friend to help you set it up. But once set up, life's easy again!! Just click to highlight the song you want and double click to grab it! I've downloaded as many as 6 at a time although this does slow down the d/l times. With only one d/l, I've been able to get one in 2 minutes 15 seconds! 7. Other MP3 options? The websites seem to open and get closed down quickly. The download times are not good. The quickest and easiest is to have a friend and a zip drive! Of course someone's got to get the songs first! 8. I'm not into songs. What else is there? Well, just type MIRC into any search engine and guess how many entries you'll find? Try it when you have some time to surf!
