The Seven Sisters

San Luis Obispo County

By Bethany Payton

The Seven sisters are located in a line of peaks between Morro Bay, California and San Luis Obispo. In some cases they are called the nine sisters because there are two more peaks in the ocean past morro rock.

The Seven sisters are put under the category of volcanoes. Although they are not volcanoes anymore, they are all extinct.

There are many recreational activities that can be done on most of the seven sisters. Bishop's peak is a much loved hiking and walking place. There are trails and beaten paths up to the top, where you can see over all of San Luis Obispo. Morro Rock in Morro Bay California is not allowed to be hiked on or climbed. It is a bird sanctuary and is very dangerous for climbing.

The seven sisters formed around 25 million years ago as a result of the pacific plate going under the North American plate. At the time of their forming, the San Andreas fault wasn't formed yet.
