The Shangri-Las

Undoubtedly the "punkiest girl group of the sixties", The Shangri-Las were formed by four young women from Queens, NY. Due to the untimely death of one of the girls, they performed as a trio. The group gained local fame with the imitation of then current hits.

In 1964, The Shangri-Las came to the attention of producer George "Shadow" Martin, who arranged for a contract with the newly formed Red Bird Label. Morton wrote and produced "Remember (Walkin In The Sand)" a record that quickly established the group by climbing to the National Top Five. He next employed the writing services of Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry to supply a follow up. Greenwich and Barry provided several girl-group hits for Phil Spector and Lesley Gore. Their contribution was "Leader Of The Pack" , an instant classic that went straight to number one.
