CUB KODA

b. Michael Koda, 1 August 1948, Detroit, Michigan, USA, d. 1 July 2000, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Guitarist Michael "Cub" Koda led the hard-rock/soul trio Brownsville Station during the 70s and later released a string of roots-oriented solo albums for various labels. Koda took his nickname from a character on television's Mickey Mouse Club, Cubby. Raised listening to jazz records as a child, he began playing drums at the age of five, switching to guitar at the age of 13. His first high-school band, the Del-Tinos, recorded three singles and a number of unreleased tracks later collected on an album. In 1969, he formed Brownsville Station, a 50s-rock-orientated band who enjoyed a 1973/4 US number 3/UK Top 30 single "Smokin' In The Boys' Room" (later successfully revived by Mötley Crüe in 1985). When Brownsville Station disbanded, Koda formed the Points before forming a lasting musical partnership with Theodore "Hound Dog" Taylor's backing band, the Houserockers (drummer Ted Harvey and guitarist Brewer Phillips). His solo albums spotlighted rockabilly music, blues, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, with Koda acting as a disc jockey, playing his favourite records and providing between-song patter. He also penned a regular record review column ("The Vinyl Junkie") for the US record collector magazine Goldmine, liner notes for various reissue labels, and edited the reference title All Music Guide To The Blues. At the start of the new millennium, Coda reunited with the Points to record the excellent Noise Monkeys, but hopes of a career revival were tragically cut short when he succumbed to kidney disease in July.

Discography:
with the Points Cub Koda And The Points (Baron 1980)***, with the Houserockers It's The Blues (Baron 1982)**, That's What I Like About The South (1984)***, Let's Get Funky mini-album (New Rose 1985)**, Cub Digs Chuck (Garageland 1989)***, Cub Digs Bo (Garageland 1991)***, with the Houserockers Live At B.L.U.E.S. 1982 (Wolf 1991)***, Abba Dabba Dabba ...
