Geology and History

Spectacular Yosemite Valley was formed during six key developmental stages over millions of years.  Originally a broad valley contained a
meandering river that eventually  cut a canyon as much as 2,000 feet deep.  During the Ice Age, the canyon was filled to its rim with ice and at least one and perhaps more glaciers.  They widened the canyon where weakened areas of rock existed and deepened the floor of Yosemite Valley, forming a U-shape.  The last glacier filled Yosemite Valley to only about a third of its depth, leaving behind a glacial moraine (rock dam).  Behind this moraine, the melting ice formed a lake.  The lake slowly filled with sediment, creating the level floor which now supports meadows and forest.

Half Dome - Truly a natural wonder and mystery.
Was there ever another half?  Can you see the profile of an Ahwahnee Indian princess stained on the side of its face?
