Bromo Eruption
8 June 2004 - Thick plumes of smoke
rise as Mount Bromo erupts, about 75 km (46
miles) south of Surabaya, the capital of East Java and Indonesia's second largest city.
Two tourists, one an Indonesian and the other from Singapore, were killed and five
others injured when Mount Bromo, a popular tourist
destination, hurled rocks the size of footballs on Monday. Indonesia sits astride the
geologically active Pacific 'ring of fire.' It has more than 100 active
volcanoes. Mount Batok (R) and Mount Semeru (Back) can also be seen
in the photo. Photo taken June 8. (REUTERS / Bostjan Fele / Indahnesia)
