Johnny Horton sings "North to Alaska" from the John Wayne movie.

And a "little southeast of Nome" puts you in the cold ocean!
And most of the gold was found on the beaches!
Nome is the destination of the Iditarod dog sled race. (1925 Race of Mercy)
Nome's "hey day" ran through the first decade of the 20th century.

Gold dredges as at Jack Wade (near Chicken) operated until the 1950's.
Gold Dredge No. 8 is near Fox outside of Fairbanks.
Digging through the permafrost to get to "paydirt".

Klondike Gold Rush to Dawson City
They landed in Skagway that winter and had to get through
(1) Chilkoot Pass or (2) White Pass (A railroad would even be built.)
Soapy Smith's thugs would charge you to take the trail to White Pass.
Then they'd rob you along the way! Take the train!
So from Skagway they'd go to Dyea and then take the Chilkoot Trail.
At Lake Bennett they'd decide when and how to go down the Yukon River.
Go over the ice (which might be thinning) or wait for the spring rapids?!?
