JADE COVE, BIG SUR
The Big Sur Coastline is one of the most awesomely
beautiful places on Earth. One of the rarest and most beautiful substances on
Earth is nephrite jade. If you are vigilant and lucky, it is free for the
taking on the majestic beaches of Big Sur, California.
Steps
- Leave
Carmel, California south on Highway 1.
- Drive
27 miles south to the Jade Cove Beach trailhead sign.
- Climb
over the access ladder and cross the terrace to the bluffs.
- Zigzag
down the cliffside trail to the beach.
- Look
at rocks on the tideline.
- Feel
smooth, green, waxy rocks.
- Scratch
them with your pocketknife. Jade will not scratch, it is harder than
steel.
- Take
as much as you can carry.
- Drive
two miles south to Willow Creek and try it again.
Tips
- Willow
Creek is easily accessible, Jade Cove is for the fearless.
- Jade
is usually found after a storm.
Warnings
- The
cliffs of Big Sur are treacherous. Attempt these climbs at your own risk.
Help is not nearby.
- The
surf is extremely dangerous. Remember,this is a wild place, there are no
lifeguards.
Things You'll Need
- Windbreaker.
- Sturdy
non-slip shoes.
- Pocketknife.
- Pack
or carrying bag.
- Camera.
