Matterhorn

Swiss-Italian Alps

By Henri Schlingschroeder

The Matterhorn is located in the Swiss-Italian Alps.
It can be reached from Zeamatt, Switzerland as Breuil/Cervinia, Italy.
It is on the European Plate. The canton of Valois is especially known for having
mountains, ski resorts and wine. The Matterhorn is one of the most popular mountains
in the Alps. A number of its peaks exceed 6000m and scenic glaciers, waterfalls, valleys,
panoramas, and small lakes are commonplace here. In the Upper, German-speaking part of the canton
the Aletsch Glacier descends like a great highway of ice from the base of some of the Alps' highest summits.
Although the Matterhorn is not technically difficult to climb, it is a strenuous climb and not appropriate
for novices. The rating is about 5.4-5.5. Inexperienced climbers should not attempt and ascent at Matterhorn
as their first mountain.
