Mike Darrow
and The Chums
Mike Darrow was one of Toronto radio station
CHUM-AM's top disc jockeys. As a means of promoting the radio station, it would
release novelty records featuring CHUM personalities. Darrow
released the second of a long line of these recordings (the first was DJ Hank
Noble's 1957 hit "Here Comes The Night").
Darrow did a take off of "The Battle Of New Orleans" with lyrics re-written by CHUM's
other resident personality, Garry Ferrier, called "The Battle Of Queenston Heights" which reached #17 on the CHUM chart (and affiliated
stations) over the course of 9 weeks in the summer of 1959.
In March 1964 Darrow teamed up with several CHUM DJs
- Garry Ferrier, John Spragge, Bob McAdorey - under the collective handle of The CHUMingbirds doing a Garry Ferrier song called
"Brotherhood Of Man". The song reached #24 after 7 weeks on the CHUM chart.
Mike Darrow also hosted Club 6 on CBLT (1961-62).
Last May at The Graham Spry Theatre, in the CBC
Broadcasting Centre there was an airing of the Feb. 7, 1961 show which featured a personable, relaxed host in the likes of
Mike Darrow himself.
