INSTANT FUNK
Based in Philadelphia, USA, Instant Funk
comprised James Carmichael (vocals), George Bell (guitar), Kim Miller (guitar),
Scotty Miller (drums), Raymond Earl (bass), Dennis Richardson (keyboards),
Charles Williams (percussion), Larry Davis (trumpet) and John Onderline (sax). They were ostensibly the musical vehicle
for noted producer/writer Bunny Sigler, who used them for the instrumentation
on his own albums and subsequently secured them a contract with T.S.O.P.
Records. Their debut album, Get Down With The Philly Jump, received
considerable attention, thanks to the success of the single, “It Ain't Reggae (But It's Funky”. Their biggest breakthrough
was achieved through “I Got My Mind Made Up”, a number
20 US hit and gold disc for Salsoul Records in 1979.
They recorded further albums for that label without coming close to repeating
this success, and eventually surfaced in 1985, recording “Tailspin” for the Pop
Art label.
