Move on to Dawson City

Pingo Fire

Wednesday - June 23, 2004
1PM We continue out from Fox toward Delta Junction.
10 miles northeast is Rika's Roadhouse.
A Big Delta State Historical Park ranger gives a short colorful story.
It's a peaceful spot for a bit of history, a stretch and strawberry-rhubarb pie.
Along the way we see some large fire smoke coming from the mountains.
6PM Arrived at our first Westmark Motel. It's hot! Just a fan in the room.
Use the restaurant, it's air conditioned. They have huge margaritas.
Burnt Paw cabins, gift shop, and husky puppies are next door.
We had just enough energy to cross the Glenn Hwy to the little bookstore.

We didn't get the "Tour Thursday" (see below)
"Our Thursday" - June 24th
Wednesday night call (late). Bags are not out at 5AM but 8AM.
Remember the fires? Well there's one threatening the Chicken, Alaska area.
We get breakfast at a reasonable hour but it's still hot! We wait for news.
1:30PM The fire has crossed the road in the mountains. We will fly to Dawson!
We take a right at Tetlin Junction and head toward Northway.
We actually go through customs (sort of) at the airstrip.
It's a pretty big plane and seats exactly 28 (the number in our coach!).
4:30PM Arrive at the Westmark Dawson City.
