PAINTED ROCK

Carrizo Plain National Monument - SLO County

Chumash Indians and American Indian Rock Art

Click Here for Carrizo Plain Mainpage or Trip Log and Notes.

Introduction
Stay on the path. The raised middle area is probably an archaeological midden.
Vandalism and natural processes have ruined much of the rock art.
The Indian Advisory Council would like us to view the area as a sacred place.
We were told it was okay to take personal photos of the rock art.
Our guide was not allowed to try to interpret the drawings but we could.
Chumash Indian artist, Lovejoy, was instructed not to make exact copies of the art work.
Art drawings included here were provided by Dr. John Johnson to the tour group.
Dr Johnson works with the Chumash Indian Council & the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum.
